A large majority of students who enroll in a California community college requires pre-collegiate level coursework. Some students require coursework several levels below college. For these students, just passing the first of these "basic skills" courses is an accomplishment. Some 60 percent of all basic skills students passed their first basic skills course. The next significant milestone is progressing through a sequence of courses to pass a college-level course; depending on the subject, from 16 percent to 35 percent of basic skills students accomplished this milestone.
